Fighting Poverty with Passion
Tulane University’s Center for Public Service collaborated with the AmeriCorps VISTA Program to sponsor 25 AmeriCorps VISTA members to work full-time with community partners, assisting in efforts to serve New Orleans. During their term, VISTA members work to develop and forge long-term partnerships between the local community and the Center for Public Service–which oversees the public service graduation requirement for Newcomb-Tulane undergraduate students. VISTA members act as liaisons between the Center for Public Service and the community, and help to arrange service-learning and internship experiences for students at a VISTA placement site. The goal of this program is to have AmeriCorps VISTA members, Tulane students, as well as faculty and staff, assist community partners with capacity building in the coming years as the city continues to recover from Hurricane Katrina.
