Lafitte Greenway Bike & Bash: Safety Education

The Greenway has now been officially open for a month! At Friends of Lafitte Greenway we are in full swing with Green-Ups (community trash pick-up events), programming, and ongoing improvements to the Greenway. On top of all of our regular programming, events, and managerial duties we planned our first free community event to celebrate the grand opening of the Greenway. The Lafitte Greenway Bike & Bash was a free community bike ride, walk, and party with live musical entertainment. One of the goals for this event was to promote and educate community members about safety on the Greenway.

One of the Lafitte Greenway Bike & Bash Safety Teams!

The Bike & Bash event started at Lemann Playground in Treme where we had partners set up talking about bike and pedestrian safety as well as driver awareness when crossing an  intersection. Along the route we had safety teams of two that helped attendees cross the busy intersections along the way. It was important to have these teams for this event because of how new the Greenway and Flashing Safety Beacon technology is for the city. The event ended successfully and safely at Parkway Bakery & Tavern where we had our Bash that included a Bike Easy bike valet station, delicious poboy sandwiches, beverages, and live music.

The first annual Lafitte Greenway Bike & Bash was a total success!!

“As someone who’s been a victim of negligence, an motor/ biker violence more than once I am so, SO grateful for people like you and all the great work you’re doing. Thanks for being the ones brave and strong enough to carry our torch :).” ~Aaron Franklin-White, Friends of Lafitte Greenway Volunteer/Supporter
