Fighting Poverty with Passion

New Home and a New Car

I have a new home! Well, a work home. I am now working out of the Tulane City Center and I couldn’t be happier. Two great events happened at TCC this month. The first was the AmeriCorps VISTA 50th Anniversary celebration and panel discussion from past VISTA’s describing their experiences and answering questions from current VISTA’s and community members.

The second was the Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard: Past, Present, and Future exhibition uncovering stories of people and places as told through the build landscape of the historical boulevard. The exhibit will be on display through December 5th and I recommend everyone to check it out! TCC hosts public professional development workshops and architectural exhibits year round and I am lucky to have such a short commute to these opportunities.

My roommate and the one and only @joeycouvillon is a man passionate about sustainability. He knows he wants to work to bring sustainability to communities. In fact, right now he is reading the book, “Green Giants: How Smart Companies Turn Sustainability into Billion-Dollar Business”. We found out through our Strengths Quest workshop earlier in the year that one of Joey’s strengths is futuristic. This month, he took those passions and strengths and turned them into action. He is the proud new owner of the Nissan Leaf. Naturally, I went along for the ride (pun intended) and took some pictures.

Joey inspired me to take a closer look at fiscal responsibility and budgeting. In timely fashion, this week in our weekly professional development, the topic was personal budgeting while living on the AmeriCorps stipend. We reviewed resources like “Living on the Living Allowance”  and heard a presentation from Tulane Center for Public Service’s Development Director Kate Schuman on tracking spending, maintaining a realistic budget, setting financial goals, and great resources on credit card counseling and general money advice from sites like Moneyunder30.com.

Congrats on the new car Joey and cheers to a more sustainable world!
