Fighting Poverty with Passion
On April 19th, the Eden House community celebrated our first graduate, Christina!! I was in charge of planning the graduation and I must say, I am very proud how it turned out!
The graduation was held at Trinity Parish House which is a beautiful, old, garden district home that is owned by Trinity Episcopal Church. The week leading up to the event, it rained every single day. Not just a drizzle here and there, but heavy, New Orleans rain. On the morning of the graduation, I went outside and the sun was shining! I had planned to have the reception outside, so I was thrilled that we didn’t have to depend on our rain plan.
As the guests began arriving, I immediately realized that this event was going to be very different from our past Eden House events. This was because, all 65 guests at the graduation, were directly tied to Christina or Eden House and had a deep understanding of our program, Christina’s story, and how she had completely transformed during her two years at Eden House.
Eden House’s Executive Director, Kara Van de Carr opened the ceremony by welcoming the guests and reflecting back on the two years since Christina started at Eden House. Secondly, Former Eden House Resident Director, Clemmie Greenlee introduced Christina and shared stories about her time at Eden House. Eden House Co-Founder Katherine Green presented Christina with her diploma and Rev. Mitch Smith closed out the ceremony by reflecting on the vital work that Eden House is doing in the New Orleans community.
The ceremony was followed by a beautiful reception outside on the patio. The guests lingered for over an hour talking, laughing, and taking pictures. Christina had over 20 family members and friends attend and it was an emotional day for them as they watched Christina graduate for the first time in her life.
A very special thank you to Liz Jurey for photographing the event, Hallie Boh for donating food and beverages, our speakers, and ZONTA International for donating the beautiful cake! I am honored that I got to plan the first Eden House graduation and I look forward to returning to New Orleans for years to come for future graduations! #chooselove
