Fighting Poverty with Passion
Hi, my name is Mary Foley and I am the new VISTA at A’s & Aces. I graduated from Tulane University in 2013 with a BA in International Relations and a minor in Economics. The following year, I served as an AmeriCorps member at the International Institute of St. Louis, a refugee resettlement agency. I worked in the Economic Development department there and helped refugee and immigrant entrepreneurs start, strengthen and/or expand their small businesses. In addition, I applied for public assistance on behalf of all newly arrived refugees, some of whom I had even picked up from the airport! It was such an incredible experience that I decided to do another year of service, this time back in New Orleans. The Polar Vortex reminded me that it’s best that I stay as far south as possible.
Enough about me–A’s & Aces has more important news to share. It’s been a busy month for us! Once summer camp ended, we had just a couple of weeks to prepare for the new school year. We are excited to offer our programming this year at Homer Plessy Community School, Mildred Osborne Charter School, ARISE Academy, Lawrence D. Crocker College Prep and Edward Hynes Charter School. We will also be having after-school programs at Dillard University and Joe Brown Park, as well as competitive Saturday tournament practices at Pontchartrain Park!
In addition to all the excitement of the new school year, A’s & Aces was selected to be part of a nationwide competition to win $10,000 from Chase Bank on Twitter. We are one of only ten junior tennis leagues to be selected and the only New Orleans league in the competition. If you have a Twitter account, please consider voting for us. If you don’t have a Twitter, please consider getting one and then voting for us. You can vote every day until September 3rd. Thank you!
