Fighting Poverty with Passion
The second half of May and the beginning of June have flown by and summer at Eden House is in full swing. One of the biggest developments has been the expansion of our internship program. Eden House currently has twelve interns including four graduate school interns. Probably the most noticeable impact of this has been the level of activity at Eden House on a daily basis. I have been reflecting a lot recently about my first couple of months at Eden House starting in August of 2012. It is almost hard to believe that there was a period of time before there were residents when there were only two or three of us in the house all day. These days there is a constant stream of new faces. It is so exciting to see the Eden House community grow. Our wonderful interns have enabled us to tackle some much needed projects – everything from organizing our clothing closest which was in dire need of some TLC to essential prep work for upcoming conferences.
Our beautiful new clothing closet – thanks interns!
Our expanded internship program has also provided a forum for us to broaden current community partnerships. As part of our internship program, we are offering a Professional Development series, held each week, featuring various community partners as our guest speakers. Last week, we were honored to have the brilliant Dr. Stacy Drury speak to our interns and staff. Dr. Drury is a Tulane med school neuro geneticist and has done fascinating research on the effects of trauma on the brain, related to human trafficking and how it changes the brain and affects overall health. This past week our guest was Mr. John Shalett, the Executive Director of Trinity Counseling and Training Center (TCTC). Mr. Shalett led us in a session titled, “Self Care for the Care Giver” – a crucial issue in sustainable, healthy non-profit work.
