Field Report: Green Light New Orleans

As you may or may not know, Green Light gets the majority of our funding from the New Orleans City Council EnergySmart initiative. The city council started this initiative in February 2011 to give New Orleans residents incentives to do more green things in their homes. EnergySmart provides the majority of the light bulbs Green Light installs. They first gave Green Light a goal of installing 70,000 free CFLs by 2013. The program has been so successful that they have recently raised our goal to 90,000! Though the funding right now is only for East Bank Orleans Parish, we hope to be able to go to the West Bank, and other parishes soon.

This is very exciting for us, and the main thing we need now is for people to apply for the program.  If anyone reading this is interested in getting some free energy efficient light bulbs or knows anyone who might be, please call 504-324-2429. The service is open to any resident of New Orleans, and you do not need to own your home. If you apply, Green Light will send a group of volunteers to your home to install the light bulbs themselves.
